Pamukkale's travertine plateaus mark the last great geological marvel of this amazing place. The deposition of mineral deposits over thousands of years produces these large flat surfaces that provide raised platforms with amazing vistas of the surrounding terrain. Shallow lakes and a sophisticated network of micro-terraces on the plateaus produces delicate patterns seen from above. These plateaus, according to scientific investigations, keep expanding both vertically and horizontally under continuous mineral deposition. Different rates of mineral precipitation and water flow provide distinctive textures and patterns on the surface of the plateaus. Studies have shown that the hydrology of the site depends much on the plateaus, which function as natural water distribution networks preserving the whole ecology. Important geological and archaeological data, including old human relics and fossilised plant elements, also finds preservation on the plateaus. Modern conservation initiatives concentrate on preserving these fragile landforms while enabling regulated access for tourists and scientific research.
