With some of television's most amazing sequences, notably the wildlings' epic wall climb in season three, HBO's amazing budget for Game of Thrones most certainly paid off. Although the finished piece displayed a death-defying climb up a 700-foot ice wall, behind-the-scenes reality reveals some deft movie wizardry at work. Although the production crew used a vertical climbing platform, the real height seemed to be less than the show's stunning 300-foot plunge. This behind-the-scenes look shows how deft set design, strategic camera angles, and post-production effects may turn a really small setup into an epic climax that had spectators hitching their breath. Combining actual effects with computer-generated imagery highlights the change in television production values, whereby physical sets and digital improvement allow even apparently impossible sequences to be realised. The fact that the two most recognisable components of the show, the Wall and the dragons, mostly depended on green screen technology to get their amazing final look intrigues me most.
