Honestly, it's a little letdown to learn how the amazing dragons in Game of Thrones were shot. Although everyone agrees that CGI is essential for current movies, the sight of Emilia Clarke challenging what seems to be little more than a green stick with some fabric wrapped around seems almost disrespectful to the great beasts we came to know and love. It is striking how different this basic prop is from the finished work: those terrible, magnificent dragons that rule the Westeros' sky. It's evidence of Clarke's acting prowess that she could keep such passion while basically working on what looks to be a kindergarten craft project. The decision of the production crew to utilise such a simple stand-in for these massive, terrifying beasts seems almost humorously simplistic. But it also highlights the amazing ability of contemporary CGI technology and post-production work to turn these little objects into the legendary dragons that became series emblematic icons. Maybe this also reminds us of how much the audience's willingness to suspend disbelief and the actors' capacity to sell these fanciful components determine the magic in modern television.
